Other studies have found that AP-5 and nifedipine decrease LTP, and AP-5 acts in a concentration dependent manner (Huber et al., 1995; Ikegaya et al., 1995). In the present study, we found that the magnitude of the decrease in LTP induced by combined application of AP-5 and nifedipine was significantly higher than when each drug was administered separately.

The influence of the amygdala on the induction of LTP was demonstrated in a series of studies carried out in the last decade of the 20th century (Akirav and Richter-Levin, 1999a,b; Ikegaya et al., 1994; Ikegaya et al., 1995a,b,c,d, 1996). Pharmacological studies provided evidence for noradrenergic and cholinergic involvement in LTP modulation (Ikegaya et al., 1997; Seidenbecher et al., 1997; Straube et al., 2003b) and in LTP induced by stimulation of the amygdala (Akirav and Richter-Levin, 2002; Frey et al., 2001; Vouimba et al., 2007).
