2015, NeuropeptidesCitation Excerpt :Similarly, an interaction of kisspeptin with GABA has been observed in pre-pubertal monkeys, bicuculline, GABA antagonist administration, aroused kisspeptin release (Kurian et al., 2012). It has been reported that in male Wistar rats short term fasting did not affect the GAD67 mRNA expression in the brain tissue (Schwartz et al., 1993), whereas in another study long term fasting increased hypothalamic GAD67 mRNA content of male rats (Leonhardt et al., 1999). It has been well known that Kiss1 and Kiss1r expression decreases in the monkey hypothalamus after 48 h fasting (Wahab et al., 2011) but the actual mechanisms regulating this suppressed kisspeptin signaling during short term fasting are unknown.

Additionally, NPY were upregulated in FD laboratory rats (Brady et al., 1990; Schwartz et al., 1993; Sucajtys-Szulc et al., 2008). Elevated NPY gene expression may drive the increase in food intake when food supply is plentiful, since many animals consume much more food than their ad libitum food intake when food deprivation or restriction ends (Zhao and Cao, 2009; Sucajtys-Szulc et al., 2008; Zhang et al., 2012; Zhao et al., 2013).

2012, CellCitation Excerpt :The neuropeptide galanin was one of the most strongly enriched genes in pS6 immunoprecipitates from fasted animals (Figure 5B). Galanin has been shown to stimulate feeding when injected directly into the hypothalamus (Parker and Bloom, 2012), but the regulation of galanin neurons by changes in nutritional state has not been described (Schwartz et al., 1993). We found that fasting induced a marked increase in pS6 in a specific subset of galanin neurons located in the DMH and MPA (Figure 5E).
