2018, Neurochemistry InternationalCitation Excerpt :Ion channels, such as sodium, potassium and calcium channels, play important roles in neuronal excitability, and are involved the pathologenesis of SE. Of calcium channels, voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDCC) (Beck et al., 1997, 1998; Heinemann and Hamon, 1986; Kohr et al., 1991; Mody et al., 1990; Speckmann and Walden, 1986) may modulate neurotransmitters release (Dooley et al., 1988; Herdon and Nahorski, 1989; Horne and Kemp, 1991; Luebke et al., 1993; Turner et al., 1993; Wessler et al., 1990; Woodward et al., 1988), neural cell migration and differentiation, and gene expression (Leclerc et al., 2006; Platel et al., 2007; Weissman et al., 2004). TLE is the most common type of intractable epilepsy, and pathological change of the hippocampus plays an important role in the epileptogenesis of TLE.
