2006, Progress in Retinal and Eye ResearchCitation Excerpt :Adult RGC axons regenerating through PN transplants form long-lasting, well-differentiated functional synapses in central retinorecipient areas (Carter et al., 1989; Keirstead et al., 1989; Vidal-Sanz et al., 1991) but they appear unable to re-establish normal topographic relationships with these targets (Sauvé et al., 1995, 2001). This is despite the fact that adult RGC axons retain the capacity to selectively recognise appropriate target neurons (Harvey and Tan, 1992; Wizenmann et al., 1993) and after deafferentation there is re-expression of at least some guidance molecules in, for example, the SC (Wizenmann et al., 1993; Bähr and Schwab, 1996; Wizenmann and Bähr, 1997; Rodger et al., 2001; see Koeberle and Bähr, 2004 for recent comprehensive review). In neonates at least, regulation of tectal ephrin A2 expression is influenced by the presence of reinnervating RGC axons (Symonds et al., 2001).
