Inflammatory processes in the brain influence many aspects of normal and pathological physiology in the brain such as alterations in synaptic (Pribiag and Stellwagen, 2014) and neuronal plasticity (Kubera et al., 2011), neurotransmission (Haroon et al., 2016; Merali et al., 1997), and related behavioral outcomes (Howerton et al., 2014). Males and females display distinct vulnerabilities to different types of inflammatory dysregulation which suggests underlying biological differences.
