MET signaling is required for multiple neurodevelopmental events, including neuronal lineage commitment and survival (Bronner-Fraser, 1995; Streit et al., 1995), proliferation (Ieraci et al., 2002), migration (Garzotto et al., 2008; Giacobini et al., 2007; Krasnoselsky et al., 1994; Powell et al., 2001; Segarra et al., 2006), neurite outgrowth (Gutierrez et al., 2004; Maina et al., 1997; Tyndall, Patel, & Walikonis, 2007), sensorimotor axon pathfinding (Caton et al., 2000; Ebens et al., 1996; Powell, Muhlfriedel, Bolz, & Levitt, 2003), and neuronal repair and survival (Maina et al., 1997, 1998; Miyazawa et al., 1998; Wong et al., 1997; Yamamoto et al., 1997). MET signaling in vitro enhances axon outgrowth, dendritogenesis, and synaptogenesis (Ebens et al., 1996; Gutierrez et al., 2004; Tyndall et al., 2007).
