Circadian clock organization in the retina: From clock components to rod and cone pathways and visual function
2023, Progress in Retinal and Eye ResearchEndogenous functioning and light response of the retinal clock in vertebrates
2022, Progress in Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :In these melatonin deficient mice, dopamine and GABA interact to regulate the retinal clock (Ruan et al., 2008). In melanopsin proficient strains, Aanat and Hiomt genes are rhythmically expressed (Zhang et al., 2018) as well as the gene coding for tyrosine hydroxylase that synthesizes dopamine (Niki et al., 1998; Sakamoto et al., 2000, 2005; Sakamoto and Ishida, 1998). The balance between dopamine and melatonin is crucial for the circadian functioning of the retina.
Phosphodiesterase10A: Abundance and circadian regulation in the retina and photoreceptor of the rat
2011, Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :This system consists of component clocks which are localized in multiple types of neurons including photoreceptor cells, horizontal cells, bipolar cells, and ganglion cells (for review, see Tosini et al., 2008). The clock within photoreceptors (Tosini et al., 2007; Schneider et al., 2010) is of particular interest because it drives a circadian rhythm in melatonin formation (Tosini and Menaker, 1996; Tosini et al., 1998; Tosini and Menaker, 1996), supposedly via the expressional control of the penultimate enzyme in melatonin formation, N-acetyltransferase [arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AANAT); EC 2.3.1.87] (Sakamoto and Ishida, 1998; Sakamoto et al., 2004; for review, see Iuvone et al., 2005). Since melatonin influences multiple physiological parameters of the vertebrate retina (for review, see Iuvone et al., 2005), clock-dependent melatonin formation in photoreceptors is of great functional significance for the retina as a whole.
