Cchl1a3 encodes the dihydropyridine-sensitive calcium channel α₁ subunit isoform predominantly expressed in skeletal muscle. mdg (muscular dysgenesis) has previously been implicated as a mutant allele of this gene. Hybridization of a rat brain cDNA probe for Cchl1a3 to Southern blots of DNAs from a panel of Chinese hamster × mouse somatic cell hybrids suggested that this gene maps to mouse Chromosome 1. Analysis of the progeny of an inbred strain cross-positioned Cchl1a3 1.3 cM proximal to the Pep-3 locus on Chr 1.

Genetic mapping of the mouse genes encoding the voltage-sensitive calcium channel subunits

The genes encoding the α₁ and β subunits of voltage-sensitive calcium channel were mapped in the mouse by analysis of the progeny of two multilocus crosses. The α₁, β₂, and β₄ subunit genes, termed Cchna1, Cchb2, and Cchb4, are located at different sites on proximal Chr 2, while the β₃ subunit gene Cchb3 maps to Chr 15 near Wnt1. These results together with previous mapping data indicate that the calcium channel genes are dispersed in the mouse genome, unlike the sodium channel genes, which are clustered.
Molecular cloning of a murine N-type calcium channel α1 subunit. Evidence for isoforms, brain distribution, and chromosomal localization

A cDNA encoding a N-type Ca²⁺ channel has been cloned from the murine neuroblastoma cell line N1A103. The open reading frame encodes a protein of 2,289 amino acids (257 kDa). Analysis of different clones provided evidence for the existence of distinct isoforms of N-type channels. High levels of mRNA were found in the pyramidal cell layers CA1, CA2 and CA3 of the hippocampus, in the dentate gyrus, in the cortex layers 2 and 4, in the subiculum and the habenula. The N-type Ca²⁺ channel gene has been localized on the chromosome 2, band A.
