2022, Psychiatry Research - NeuroimagingCitation Excerpt :Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder which is characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication as well as by a range of restricted stereotypical behaviors or interests (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). ASD pathophysiology is often associated with the "atypical connectivity theory” (Belmonte et al., 2004; Frith, 2004; Tebartz van Elst et al., 2014), which is thought to result in an autistic pattern of information processing. Compared to healthy controls "local network connectivity" is enhanced, while communication between more distant areas is reduced (Geschwind and Levitt, 2007; Tebartz van Elst et al., 2016).
