Effects of ovariectomy on the inputs from the medial nucleus of the amygdala to the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus in young adult rats
2021, Neuroscience LettersCitation Excerpt :Within the amygdala complex, the MeA is also a sexually dimorphic nucleus that plays a relevant role in the neuronal circuit that modulates female sexual behaviour by conveying olfactory information [26]. Male rats are characterized by greater MeA volume, neuronal number and volume, glial cell number and dendritic spine density than female rats [27–31]. There are two main divisions: the ventral (anterodorsal, anteroventral and posteroventral) division receives important afferents from the vomeronasal system and the olfactory bulb and is involved in the implementation of motivated behavioural responses, such as reproductive behaviour.
Selective brain neuronal and glial losses without changes in GFAP immunoreactivity: Young versus mature adult Wistar rats
2019, Mechanisms of Ageing and DevelopmentCitation Excerpt :The density of GFAP-positive astrocytes was calculated according to the following formula (Xavier et al., 2005):Nv = ΣQ/aWhere, Nv is the estimated numerical density, ΣQ is the number of astrocytes counted in each AOI and the “a” is the AOI area. An adaptation of Sholl’s concentric circle method was performed using Image Pro Plus 6.0 software (Sholl, 1953; Dall’Oglio et al., 2008). This method consists of inserting virtual circles at intervals of 4.03 μm around each astrocyte.
The Medial Amygdala, Hormones, Pheromones, Social Behavior Network, and Mating Behavior
2017, Hormones, Brain and Behavior: Third EditionHeterogeneous electrophysiological and morphological properties of neurons in the mouse medial amygdala in vitro
2012, Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :The medial division of the extended amygdala is a large complex of nuclei that project to the medial hypothalamus, thus influencing the hormonal aspects of behavior and emotional states. This region consists of MeA and the medial division of the bed nucleus of ST (Dall’Oglio et al., 2008; Pereno et al., 2011). GABA immunostaining showed dense staining in all structures of the medial division of the extended amygdala.
